The American airline United Airlines serves customers in the United States and around the world. It operates a fleet of aircraft and has hubs in Chicago-O’Hare, Denver, and Houston. It is one of the largest airlines in the world by revenue and market cap, and it’s also the second-largest carrier by number of destinations served. United is part of the Star Alliance, and its frequent-flyer program MileagePlus rewards members with award miles for flights and other perks. The company has a long history of mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures, but it has recently focused on its core business. Its parent company, UAL, has also acquired Western International (later Westin Hotels) in 1970, Hertz Corporation (the largest car-rental business in the United States) in 1985, and Hilton International Co. (a large hotel chain) in early 1987. These businesses have since been sold off, and UAL

has concentrated on its main subsidiary, United Airlines. In the mid-1990s, United began investing in a wide range of new aircraft to increase its fleet size and improve its fleet mix. As a result, it was able to grow its network and become one of the largest airlines in the world by 2000. In 2002, however, the airline began to struggle with financial difficulties due to increasing competition from other carriers and a severe recession in the United States. During this time, the airline began implementing major cost-saving measures, including reducing flight routes and capacity and cutting employee salaries and benefits. The airline also launched low-fare carrier Ted Airlines in 2004, and it purchased an equity stake in Aloha Airlines in 2007. In 2010 United merged with Continental Airlines to form United Continental Holdings. The two airlines remain one of the largest airlines in the world today. While air travel is still among the safest modes of transportation, United has experienced a series of high-profile safety incidents in recent years. The company’s safety reputation has been impacted by these incidents, and the FAA has increased oversight of United to ensure that it is complying with safety regulations and effectively managing risk. Despite these challenges, United remains committed to improving its service quality, and it is making strides in the digital arena. For example, the airline recently introduced a new flight-status service that provides passengers with faster, more transparent and context-rich information than previous digital notifications. For instance, when a flight is delayed, the airline now specifies exactly which precise weather event may be impacting the delay, rather than simply stating “mechanical issues” or “bad weather.” United has also begun to use augmented reality (AR) technology on its mobile apps and other devices to help passengers better navigate airports and other destinations. For example, the airline uses AR to show passengers where their gate is, and how to get there. This is an important feature, especially for people traveling on unfamiliar ground. It can also be helpful to those with visual impairments, or for travelers who want to avoid missing a connecting flight due to delays
